Managers
Our Manager selection process is quite rigorous. We only work with managers
who meet our goals of non-correlation to the general equity markets, consistency
in returns, and integrity in all aspects of the operation. We look for low drawdowns,
top quality management with strong money management experience, and a high quality
back-office infrastructure with industry recognized auditors, accountants, and
prime brokers.
Investors
Being based in Geneva Switzerland, Sphinx works with four distinct groups of
investors: institutions, family offices, fund of funds, and accredited individuals.
We match the length of the track record and the size of the fund to the potential
investor base. We believe that the money raising process follows a life cycle:
the fund usually starts with the manager's money along with close associates,
then family offices and unrelated high net worth individuals, and then fund
of funds and finally institutions.
Process
Our sales process is deliberate and careful. All of our contacts are categorized
based on their interest in particular strategies, acceptable length of a fund's
track record, and the size of a fund. We have built our Swiss and Global databases
of key contacts through several years of personal relationships.
We scan through our contact base and call targeted institutions to explain
the basics of the manager. We also utilize passive marketing strategies, including
attendance and speaking at conferences, our website and our newsletters. If
the institution is interested in a particular manager, we forward on information
including the manager’s marketing package. We follow-up with a phone call
within the week and schedule a personal meeting between the manager and the
institution. Our personal contacts are the key to getting face-to-face meetings
for the manager. From there onwards, we keep the institutions updated and wait
for allocations.
Our monthly objective is to contact, by telephone or in person, approximately
100 of these professionals with whom we have had long-term relations.
In Switzerland, personal meetings are more productive with the money manager
present. Although we provide the contacts and schedule all the meetings, we
prefer the manager commit to traveling often for the first year of our relationship.
After that, Sphinx Consulting will continue to follow up on the client’s
behalf. |
